Teaching English Abroad

Most people who are looking to teach English abroad want to do it because of the lure of travelling the globe while making money. However, there are so many more benefits to think about! For some it may be that teaching in the UK comes with mountains of paperwork, for example. Whatever your reason for wanting to take the leap, we at Idyoma are here to give you some food for thought on where you should go to teach English abroad.

The Best Countries to Teach English Abroad

  • Spain

  • China

  • Vietnam

Teaching English Abroad: Spain

For years now, the best market for jobs to teach English abroad has been in Spain, and it doesn’t look like this is going to change any time soon.

The financial crisis that devastated the country between 2008 - 2014 has resulted in the ability to speak fluent English being a hot commodity, as it increases a person’s employability. The reason for this is because of the vast amount of tourist hotspots in the country, which are most commonly frequented by, you guessed it, British tourists.

What makes it such a desirable country to teach English abroad, though, is the low cost of living. Higher-end apartments are easy to come by for great prices, as well as the fantastic food-spots and nightlife. All of this and so much more makes Spain a must-consider when teaching English abroad.

Teaching English Abroad: China

With an estimated 400 million and growing English language learners, it’s easy to see why finding a job teaching English abroad in China wouldn’t be too difficult. In fact, the Chinese are struggling to fill the vacancies available currently due to the sheer demand.

China is one of the most diverse countries on Earth, both geographically and culturally. This means you really can be picky about where you’d like to work. If there’s a certain place you’ve always wanted to go and explore, it’s pretty likely you’ll be able to find a job there.

As well as being an incredibly fascinating country to live and work in, China is also notoriously hospitable. Most jobs teaching English there pay very well, and are often subsidised with extra perks, such as paid accommodation, flight reimbursement and paid holidays.

Teaching English Abroad: Vietnam

If you’ve had the pleasure of reading any of my past Idyoma blogs, you’ll know how glowingly I recommend Vietnam

Vietnam is one of the fastest developing countries on the planet, which has led their government to invest hugely to make sure the majority of the population speaks fluent English. Good news for those looking to teach English abroad!

The two major cities, Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh, already have over 450 English Language Learning Centres between them. This makes finding a job quite simple. The country is usually masked by it’s stunning scenery and deep history, however, it is also famous for its low cost of living, warm climate and stunning travel opportunities, making it a definite contender for those looking to teach English abroad.
