Cities to Visit in Ireland

Travelling abroad and topping up your tan is all well and good, but have you considered taking your vacay in good old ‘Blighty? London is usually first to mind, or the beautiful Scottish Highlands, perhaps. But in this article on the Idyoma blog, I’ll be going through some of the best cities to visit in Ireland.

Cities to Visit in Ireland: Dublin

No trip to Dublin can be considered a success without an excursion to the world-famous Guinness Storehouse Factory, the single most popular tourist attraction in all of Ireland. A ticket for a guided tour will set you back around 18 euro, a relative snip all things considered!

Next stop; St Patrick’s Cathedral. The largest church in Ireland, located in the heart of this incredible city. Founded in 1191, this stunning building is steeped in over 800 years of Irish history and culture.

Finally, a stroll over Ha’Penny Bridge. I know, the name is odd. However, interestingly, this beautiful white picketed bridge gets its name from the former Half Penny toll locals had to pay to cross it. It was built in 1816, and appears on many novelties and nick-nacks as a symbol of all things Ireland.

All of this and so much more to do, makes Dublin undoubtedly one of the best cities to visit in Ireland.

Cities to Visit in Ireland: Galway

Next on my list of the best cities to visit in Ireland; Galway.

Galway is a hotbed of traditional Irish music, culture and great people. A gateway to the Atlantic Ocean; this fascinating slice of Ireland gives a glimpse into some of the most interesting historical events the country has witnessed.

Your first stop should be the Latin Quarter. Here you’ll find some of Galway’s favourite pubs, bars and restaurants, as well as an eclectic array of Irish folk art and souvenirs for sale. If it’s a party you’re looking for, then look no further, as the Galway street performers, buskers and entertainers provide a constant buzz that never tires.

Galway City Museum opened in a new building in 2007, and provides a free and multifaceted attraction covering Galway’s archaeology, folk history, art and natural history.

Housing everything from traditional Galway sailboats, to artifacts and silverware from the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries, there’s plenty to see, whatever your taste. There’s also a photography gallery documenting the city from the 1950’s onwards.

Cities to Visit in Ireland: Cork

The final stop on my list of cities to visit in Ireland is the wonderfully historical, Cork.

Here you’ll find some of the most stunning architecture in the country, with landmarks such as Blarney Castle, Cork City Gaol and St Fin Barre’s Cathedral, to name a few.

We’ll start with Blarney Castle. This centuries’ old fortress just oozes character, and is home to the world-famous Blarney Stone, which is said to bestow all those who kiss it with the Irish gift-of-the-gab.

Cork City Gaol (jail) opened its doors to prisoners both male and female in 1824, but was then converted to a female-only facility in 1878. It remained that way until men who failed to mask their opposition to the 1920 Anglo-Irish Treaty were incarcerated there in 1922-1923.

These days it’s a world-famous tourist attraction, with guided tours available during the day, and for a more memorable, atmospheric experience, private evening tours (available on request!).
